All my life I was a mathematics fan. What I love the most about it is the abstraction. It may seem a little awkward to love a subject simply because it does not need to have any practical applications in real world, but I believe that pure mathematics is beautiful. It is a some kind of art. But unlike any other, mathematics is not created, it is understood. So the only people who can appreciate it are the artistes. Others just find it hard or boring.
Is math really hard? If one can understand logic, which is assumed to be the only way humans communicate through it, then one can understand math. I mean the pure math is nothing but a collection of arguments which are shown to be true using logic and some axioms. The axioms are the first step in any argument in mathematics. They are propositions that we prefer to accept their correctness without any proof. It is amazing that we cannot start with nothing. We at least need to assume the existence of nothing.
There is another aspect of math which is unique to mathematics. It is its vastness of ideas. Nowadays, no human being can claim that knows what is exactly happening in the different frontiers of mathematics. Every year thousands of research papers are published in math. This makes the tracking of the progress of the different branches very difficult. A lot of these papers are not read by anyone except their writers and some of their relatives in math. This is the beauty of the math in this age, in my opinion. I mean one can work all his life on some subjects and be sure that these subjects are his/hers and nobody in the world will ever try to read his/her papers or understand his/her work. It is like a private form of art. Of course one can choose to work on questions that are famous and try to find answers to get famous in math. But doing this cannot have a personal part of math for himself.
I have two or there leads in abstract math which are now mine. I like to think of them as corners for my thoughts. I really like to be alone in these areas. I publish my work on them and am pretty sure that 2 or 3 read my papers. This gives me a sense of privacy in life that I am deprived of in this overcrowded world.
